ChatGPT for teachers: prompts for notes, MCQs and lesson plans
Tell ChatGPT the exam, its current pattern, your students' level, the format and the syllabus, and you get drafts worth editing. Then check every answer key yourself before students see it.

ChatGPT is good at first drafts and unreliable on facts. Tell it the exam, the current pattern, your students' level, the format you want back and the syllabus text to stay inside. You'll get notes, MCQs and lesson plans that need editing rather than rewriting. Then check every answer key yourself before a student sees it, because one wrong key in a paid mock test costs more goodwill than the hour you saved.
Why a one-line prompt gives you generic questions
Most prompt lists online were written for American classrooms, with grade levels and state standards. A coaching teacher in Kota or Patna needs questions that follow NTA's marking scheme, notes that stay inside the syllabus, and Hindi that matches the student's textbook. ChatGPT won't apply any of that unless you type it.
Make 10 MCQs on thermodynamics gets you ten questions pitched at nobody in particular. The version below says who will answer, under which rules, and what you'll do with the result.
I teach chemistry to a NEET UG batch of Class 12 students. Write 10 MCQs on thermodynamics from the NCERT Class 11 chemistry chapter. Each question has four options and exactly one correct answer. Make 4 easy, 4 moderate and 2 hard. For each, give the correct option and one line on why each wrong option is wrong. Return a table with columns: Q.No, Question, A, B, C, D, Answer, Explanation. Do not use anything outside that NCERT chapter.
The table lets you paste the set into a spreadsheet, sort by difficulty and spot repeats. The line on wrong options is for you, not the students. It shows whether ChatGPT understood the distractors or picked them at random.
You needn't retype the context each time. Make a Project for each batch, upload its syllabus PDF and add project instructions. OpenAI's help centre says those apply only inside that project and override your general custom instructions, so your NEET batch and your Class 9 foundation batch stay separate.
Notes work best when the facts come from your own lecture
If you try one prompt tomorrow, make it this one. It saves the most time for the least risk, because the facts are yours. Paste the transcript of a recorded lecture, or last year's typed notes, and ask ChatGPT for structure, nothing more.
Below is the transcript of my 70-minute UPSC Prelims lecture on Parliament. Turn it into revision notes of about two pages. Keep my examples and my order of topics. Use short headings and points, and keep every article number I mention. Do not add any fact that is not in the transcript. At the end, list anything in the transcript that looks wrong or unclear.
Expect clean, well-ordered notes on the first try. Expect too that it flattens your emphasis, because it can't tell that the line you repeated three times is the one that gets asked. If you teach in Hinglish, the auto-transcript will garble names and numbers, and ChatGPT can tidy the sentence around a wrong figure without noticing. Check those first. The last instruction can catch a slip you made at the board, such as a wrong article number, but verify each flag against the Constitution itself. It can be confidently wrong in the other direction too.
For school boards, paste the current syllabus from cbseacademic.nic.in or your state board's site and tell it to stay inside that document. NCERT has dropped and moved chapters in recent sessions, and a model that learnt from older books can still teach a topic your students no longer study. For NEET, paste the unit from the syllabus the National Medical Commission notified, which NTA posts on the NEET site. The line If a topic is not in the syllabus above, leave it out and tell me does more work than any amount of "be accurate".
MCQs that follow NTA's current pattern
ChatGPT's idea of "NEET pattern" can be several years old. The NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin sets 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes. That is 45 each in Physics and Chemistry and 90 in Biology, with four marks for a correct answer and minus one for a wrong one. From 2021 to 2024 the paper had 200 questions with an optional Section B. Ask for a "full NEET mock" without spelling out the current structure and you may get the old one.
JEE Main has its own trap. The 2026 bulletin on NTA's JEE Main site gives each subject 20 MCQs and 5 numerical-value questions, with negative marking in both sections. It also says Section B answers should be rounded off to the nearest integer. Unless you ask, nothing stops ChatGPT writing a numerical whose answer is 2.37. That forces rounding and invites disputes in your test series, so ask for data that lands exactly on an integer.
Write 5 JEE Main Section B numerical-value questions on rotational motion. The data must make each final answer an exact integer, with no rounding. Use g = 10 m/s² unless stated. Show the full solution for each, then list the answers separately.
For SSC and banking batches, the most useful prompt asks for variants. Paste one question you like and ask for 20 more at the same difficulty, with different numbers or names. Students training for sectional time limits need volume, and this gives you a day's practice sheet in minutes. Variants also produce the quietest errors: change the numbers and the correct answer can drop out of the options entirely. Solve every one. ChatGPT's difficulty labels are guesses too; only your batch's attempt data tells you which questions were hard.
Lesson plans that fit a 90-minute coaching lecture
School-style plans, with a warm-up, a group activity and an exit ticket, don't fit a coaching class. A coaching lecture runs on concept, solved examples, previous year questions, a quick check and homework. Say so, along with the batch size and the device most students use.
Plan a 90-minute online class on percentages for a batch of 120 SSC CGL aspirants. Use timed blocks: concept with shortcuts, 6 solved examples from easy to hard, a 10-question live poll, 10 minutes of doubts, and a 15-question DPP for homework. Most students join on phones, so keep each board screen to a few lines. Mark where I should pause for chat questions.
You'll get a reasonable skeleton to adjust in five minutes. Where it goes wrong is previous year questions. Ask for PYQs and it will happily label questions with an exam, a year and even a shift, and some were never asked. Take PYQs only from the official papers: UPSC publishes previous question papers on upsc.gov.in, and NTA posts JEE Main papers on its exam site. A made-up "CGL 2019" tag gets caught by the repeater in your batch who sat that paper.
Hindi output needs a Hindi-medium teacher's eye
ChatGPT writes fluent Hindi, and the fluency hides problems. In a science paper the risk is terminology. NCERT's Hindi-medium physics uses चाल for speed and वेग for velocity, so a question that swaps them asks something different. Each English term should map to the same Hindi term every time, and to the one in your students' textbook.
Translate these notes into Hindi for Hindi-medium NEET students. Use the technical terms from NCERT's Hindi-medium textbooks. The first time each technical term appears, put the English term in brackets. Keep formulas, units and chemical symbols in English.
Where you're unsure of a term, the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology publishes English-Hindi glossaries on cstt.education.gov.in. Set test papers bilingual. The NEET bulletin gives Hindi-medium candidates a booklet in English and Hindi, and says the English version is final where a translation is ambiguous. A Hindi question that drifts from the English costs marks in the real exam, and in your mock it starts an argument. For explanations in class, ask instead for simple spoken Hindi, the way a teacher explains, with English technical terms. It sounds far more like a Hindi-belt classroom than textbook Hindi does.
The checking routine before anything reaches students
Every set goes through the same checks, in this order.
- Solve each question yourself, or have a second teacher solve it blind, before looking at ChatGPT's key.
- Paste the questions without answers into a fresh chat and ask it to solve them. Investigate every disagreement with the first key, and don't treat agreement as proof.
- Check every number, date, constant and article number against the textbook or the official source.
- Confirm each question sits inside the syllabus you pasted and the current exam pattern.
- Read the explanations as well as the keys. A wrong method that lands on the right option teaches the wrong method.
- Search a distinctive line from a few questions, in case one was lifted from a published book or another institute's paper.
- Have a Hindi-medium teacher read the Hindi version once, start to finish.
This takes time, and it should. The saving comes from not writing first drafts by hand. If a set fails the first step badly, throw it away and fix the prompt rather than repairing every question.
What to keep out of ChatGPT
Start with student data. Names, phone numbers, marks and photos of named answer sheets are personal data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 makes your institute answerable for how it handles them, so replace names with roll numbers before pasting anything about performance. Turning off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, then Data controls, stops new chats being used for training, but it doesn't make student data safe to share. Our DPDP checklist for coaching institutes covers the wider duties.
Copyrighted material comes next. Asking for a "rephrased" version of a published book's chapter or another institute's module doesn't make the result yours, so rewrite from your own notes. Copyright in India arises when a work is created, so what your faculty write is protected without registration, as our guide on whether copyright registration is mandatory explains. This is general information, not legal advice.
With unreleased papers, the weak point is the login more than the AI. Picture one paid account shared by five faculty, each able to scroll through everyone's history, including next Sunday's all-India mock. OpenAI's terms don't allow account sharing anyway. Give each teacher their own login, and see our guide on preventing question paper leaks for the rest of that chain. Students are a separate question: OpenAI's terms require users to be at least 13, with a parent's or guardian's permission under 18. Tell parents before you set ChatGPT homework for a Class 8 foundation batch.
Current affairs is where it does the most damage. Even with web search on, it can pair the right scheme with the wrong year. For UPSC, state PSC and banking batches, open every source it cites and prefer PIB or the ministry's own page. AI-drawn labelled diagrams for NEET biology or ray optics can look right and carry a wrong label, so draw or scan your own. And never let it set the final key of a big test series. One disputed answer is being argued over in your students' Telegram groups by evening.
A question bank that has survived this checking is your institute's own material, worth far more than the prompts that started it. Checked MCQs can run as an online test series in Upclass Mock Test. Notes can go out with PDF watermarking, inside apps in your institute's own name. If you're turning a question bank into a paid test series, book a demo and bring a sample paper.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT make a full mock test for my institute?
Yes as a draft, no as a finished paper. A 180-question NEET mock means 180 keys and explanations to verify, plus chapter balance and difficulty to set. Use it for practice sheets and variants, and write or heavily edit the questions in your main mocks.
Can ChatGPT evaluate students' written answers?
Partly. Give it the question, a model answer and your marking scheme, and it can comment on structure, missing points and language in a UPSC Mains or board-style answer. Its marks can change between two runs on the same answer, so final marks should come from a teacher. Remove the student's name and roll number before pasting.
Do these prompts work in Gemini, Copilot or Claude?
Yes. They're plain instructions that any general AI assistant will follow, though the style and the mistakes differ. Run the same checking routine whichever you use.
Should teachers turn off "Improve the model for everyone"?
Yes, on any account used for institute work. It sits under Settings, then Data controls. OpenAI says a thumbs up or down on a reply can still send that whole conversation for training after you opt out, so don't rate chats containing student work. Temporary Chat stays out of history and training, though OpenAI may keep those chats for up to 30 days for safety.
