To start online coaching classes in India, pick one exam and one batch, decide between live, recorded or hybrid teaching, set a price and collect fees through your own payment gateway, and teach on a platform that gives students an app and protects your videos from the first class. Then launch to the people who already know you before you spend on ads. This guide takes each decision in turn, with a sample budget and a launch plan for your first 100 students.

Decide your model: live, recorded or hybrid

ModelHow it worksSuitsWatch out for
LiveScheduled classes with chat and doubts, recorded for revisionDoubt-heavy subjects, current affairs, students who need a routineA fixed timetable, and power and internet backup on your side
RecordedA self-paced course that students can buy any dayStable syllabi, and teachers with an existing audienceLower completion, higher piracy risk, and content that needs updating
HybridRecorded lectures, live doubt sessions and regular testsMost coaching batchesTwo workflows to run, so plan staff time for doubts

If you already teach offline, hybrid is the natural start: record the lectures you already give, and add live doubt sessions and tests. You can also stream your classroom to online students, but test the audio first, because classroom microphones rarely capture student questions well.

Pick an exam and a batch structure

Start narrow. "SSC CGL foundation batch, six months, starting 1 November, bilingual" sells better than "all government exams". A good batch plan fixes:

  • The syllabus, week by week, working back from the exam date.

  • The class rhythm: for example, five 90-minute classes a week at the same time.

  • Tests: weekly sectional tests and a monthly full mock, with analysis.

  • Doubts: where students ask, who answers and how fast.

  • Validity: access until the exam plus a buffer, stated clearly.

  • Language: English, Hindi or bilingual, decided before you record anything.

Live classes scale easily; doubt-solving doesn't. Plan a teaching assistant once a batch passes a few dozen active students.

Pricing and payments

You may want to price an online batch below your classroom fee, since students don't get the classroom, but test the price with your own audience rather than copying someone else's. Offer the full-batch fee, an instalment option, and a cheaper test-series-only product for students who study elsewhere.

A sample budget

For illustration, a first SSC CGL batch of 150 students at ₹4,999 each. These are example numbers, not quotes; yours will differ.

ItemAmount
Fee revenue (150 × ₹4,999)₹7,49,850
Payment gateway at 2% plus GST on the fee₹17,696
Platform, video delivery and apps for six months₹90,000
Ads and launch promotion₹75,000
Teaching assistant for doubts, six months₹1,20,000
Microphone, camera, lights and writing tablet₹40,000
Left before your own pay and taxes₹4,07,154

In this example, fixed costs of ₹3.25 lakh are covered at 67 students. Below that, the batch loses money; every student above it adds about ₹4,880. Knowing your break-even tells you how much you can sensibly spend on ads.

Collecting fees

Open a merchant account with a payment gateway in your institute's name, so fees land in your own bank account and refunds stay in your control. Standard gateway pricing is about 2% plus GST on the fee; our guide to payment gateway charges in India has the details, including UPI changes from 15 October 2026.

On GST, most service providers must register once their aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura), and service providers below that threshold making inter-state supplies are exempt from registering, according to a CBIC overview. Ask a chartered accountant about the rate, invoicing and your business structure before you launch.

Write your refund policy before the first sale, and keep it. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2024 guidelines on coaching advertisements (the CCPA guidelines) prohibit false claims about fees and refund policies.

Your tech stack

NeedTo startAs you grow
Live teachingA live class tool that recordsLive classes built into your platform, with recordings added to the course automatically
Course deliveryA course website with student loginsYour own branded apps
Video protectionEncryption and dynamic watermarkingScreen- and camera-recording detection and account-sharing prevention
TestsTimed quizzes with answer analysisA full test series with ranks and percentiles
PaymentsYour own payment gatewayInstalments, coupons and GST invoices
CommunicationWhatsApp Business with opted-in students, and emailApp notifications and a lead CRM

For equipment, spend on sound first: a good lapel or USB microphone matters more than the camera. Add a 1080p camera or a recent phone on a stand, soft lighting, a writing tablet or board, and a backup internet connection. When you're ready for your own app, read our guide to getting your own coaching app.

Protecting your content from day one

New courses leak too. Recordings from a first batch can appear on Telegram within days, and a free copy undercuts your launch just when you need paying students. From the first class:

  • never share downloadable video files or public links; an unlisted YouTube video is not protection;

  • use encrypted video with a dynamic watermark, so any leaked copy points back to a student;

  • prevent account sharing, so one paid login can't serve a whole group;

  • watermark PDFs and keep them inside your app rather than as files to forward;

  • tell students on day one that every copy is traceable to them.

Our article on video piracy in coaching explains how leaks happen and what helps.

Rules to know before you advertise

  • Advertising: the CCPA guidelines also ban false claims about selections, ranks and success rates, and any use of students' names or photos without written consent given after their success.

  • Coaching centre guidelines: the Ministry of Education's January 2024 guidelines, sent to states for consideration, propose registration, graduate tutors, no enrolment before Class 10, no misleading promises of ranks and pro-rata refunds. Check what your state has adopted if you also run a physical centre.

  • Student data: most school-level and JEE and NEET students are under 18, so India's data protection law will require a parent's consent. See our DPDP Act compliance checklist.

Launching and getting your first students

  1. Six weeks before: announce the batch to your offline students, alumni and followers. Publish the timetable, syllabus plan and fee.

  2. Four weeks before: post short teaching videos on YouTube and Instagram that solve real exam questions, each with a link to the batch page.

  3. Two weeks before: run a free demo week of real classes, not sales talks, and a free diagnostic test with detailed analysis.

  4. Launch week: offer an early-enrolment price with a genuine deadline. The CCPA guidelines prohibit false urgency such as invented "limited seats".

  5. First two weeks of classes: ask for feedback and fix the audio, pace and notes quickly.

  6. After the first test: start a referral offer, when students have seen their results and are most likely to recommend you.

Once the first batch is running, the work shifts from launching to growing a coaching institute: tracking where students come from, converting more enquiries and keeping students engaged.

Key takeaways

  • Start with one exam and one well-planned batch; hybrid teaching suits most institutes.

  • Work out your break-even number of students before you set an ad budget.

  • Collect fees in your own payment gateway, and talk to a CA about GST and structure.

  • Protect videos and PDFs from the first class, because a leak can sink a launch.

  • Launch to people who already know you, with demo classes and a free test, before paying for ads.

Where Upclass fits

Upclass gives institutes a course website, live classes, tests, payments into their own gateway, a lead CRM, analytics and branded apps on Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. VidSafe protects videos with VidSafe proprietary encryption, dynamic watermarking, screen- and camera-recording detection and account-sharing prevention. See the LMS for coaching institutes page and Upclass pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is online coaching worth it?

For most teachers and institutes, yes, if they plan for it. Online classes reach students far beyond your city, recordings keep earning after the class, and fixed costs are lower than a new centre. But online students have more choice, so you need a clear batch, good audio, regular tests, protection against leaks and steady marketing. Test demand with one well-planned batch before investing heavily.

Is online coaching better or offline?

Neither is better for everyone. Offline coaching gives routine, peer pressure and face-to-face doubt-solving, which many younger students need. Online coaching gives reach, recordings for revision and lower cost for students outside big cities. Many institutes run both: classroom batches locally, online batches for everyone else, with the same tests and a shared app.

How to start an online coaching business step by step?

First, choose one exam and plan one batch: syllabus, timetable, tests and validity. Second, pick live, recorded or hybrid teaching. Third, set a price and work out your break-even. Fourth, open a payment gateway account and check GST with a CA. Fifth, set up a platform with protected video, tests and an app. Sixth, launch to your existing audience with demo classes and a free test.
